Small Home Big Adventure: Schengen Calculation Confusion

Published: Tue 19th April 2022

The Schengen Region

There has been a lot of confusion about How many days you can go away for in Europe and how people are showing a single day change giving them a lot more days. Take the following 2 examples, where you originally get 41 days abroad, but by changing the start date by 1 day you suddenly get 65!

We use the example given from French Le Van who are amazing travellers who are doing the Schengen shuffle. Their travels are inspirational and photography is fantastic so well worth following.

The calculator is here

Example 1

Example 2 I can see how this is confusing, by changing your date of entry/control by one day you got 24 more days! Let me explain why this works.

You're only allowed to be in Europe for 90 days out of 180, but it's rolling, which changes every day. In the first screenshot we can see that counting days backwards from 2nd April 2022 the 180 days starts on 5th October 2021. In the second screenshot the date has changed to 3rd April 2022 the 180 days starts on 6th October 2021

So you can see by changing the date of Entry by 1 day, the sliding window changes by 1 day, this is important!

In the first screenshot we see 41 days so: 24 25 41 = 90, that's your limit so the calculator is right.

In the second screenshot we see 65 days. 24 25 65 = 110, so the calculator is wrong!

It's not, don't panic, the calculator is correct. Let me explain why.

We have to go back to the fact it's rolling. I said earlier that counting back 180 days from your Entry on 2nd April was 5th October 2021, but the next day it's changes

3rd April 2022 your 180 window starts on 6th October 2022. 4th April 2022 your window starts on the 7th October 2021. 5th April 2022 your window starts on the 8th October 2021. 6th April 2022 your window starts on the 9th October 2021.

etc..

Entering on the 2nd April 2022

If we keep listing all these days, you see that in 41 days from when you enter it will be:

13th May 2022 your window starts 14th November 2021, so let's calculate that:

Counting the days you were in Europe from 14th November we get 24 days from the first trip. 25 days from the second trip and 41 days from our current trip. so 24 25 41=90 you’ve used it all up and you have to back in the UK.

Entering on the 3rd April 2022

Now, if we change the entry date by 1 day and list the days again - they are the same:

3rd April 2022 your 180 window starts on 6th October 2022. 4th April 2022 your window starts on the 7th October 2021.

BUT now when we go 41 days forwards it's the 14th May 2022 and your window starts on the 15th November 2021 - This is the important but which people seem to miss.

Counting the days you were in Europe from 15th November we get 23 days from the first trip. 25 days from the second trip and 41 days from our current trip. so 23 25 41=89 So you can stay an extra day!

The next day the rolling 180 days changes again - so it starts on the 16th November 2021

Counting the days you were in Europe from 16th November we get 22 days from the first trip. 25 days from the second trip and 42 days from our current trip. so 22 25 42=89 So you can stay another day!

Keep this going, and you end up with being on 7th June 2022, the rolling 180 days starts on 9th December 2021

Counting your days now you get zero days from your first trip counted anymore, so it's just the second trip and the current trip: 0 25 65=90 and that is your last day in Europe.

I hope this clears up any confusion. If you have any questions let us know!
