Souviens Toi - Remember

at Village Martyr d'Oradour-sur-Glane

On June the 10th 1944, 200 SS committed an act of terror in Oradour-sur-Glane. They massacred 642 people including 193 children. I post these pictures with hesitancy. I've been here before but couldn't bring myself to take photographs. The village has been kept exactly as it was left, cars left, bikes and houses as they were found in June 1944. This time I felt it is important to share the reminder of the atrocities of war and took the pictures as a reminder of what we humans are capable so not to forget and hide away the past and the things that have happened. Every photo I took, I felt in my heart the sadness of war. Oradour was not a crime due to madness but the logic of a system. We must remember this, not to see it again, we must live and build a world in which crime will be folly again and reason will be peace" Claude Roy (1949)
