Finally arrived in Austria 🇦🇹 after a bit of a difficult day. We learnt the hard way about not really planning our destinations and deciding last minute where we would be going. On the boarder going into Austria we were told that oir vignette we had been using in Switzerland was wrong as we are heavier than 3.5ton , they let us off. We then walked across to the Austrian boarder and asked if the vignette we had bought for their country was correct for a motorhome and they said no as we are over 3.5 ton. So despite our paperwork stating we are a motorhome they still charge you as if you were a commercial vehicle. We had to buy a 'go box' for 5 euros and then charge it with 100 euros.
Trying to find this box wasn't easy. We stopped at every station along the route and 4th one we found they had a the box. Snowing a lot here too. We also didn't realise we need snow chains and it's a legal requirement when driving from the 1st November to April. We had no idea it was a law. Luckily we are staying put for a few days at a campsite and only a little way back to the autoroute where we won't need the snow chains.
Having a 7.5 ton lorry in cold mountains with snow is not ideal but hey ho we are here now and going to enjoy the snow, hot hot showers and infra red heat room .
Treating ourselves to a campsite called Camping Dreiländereck. A family run place and very friendly and accommodating 🙂 Has anyone been to the mountains in winter with a vehicle over 3.5 tons ? apparently it's the same in Switzerland and Germany about the snow chains but not been confirmed yet. If you know the info would be great. Would love to hear your experiences
